Member's Role
in Building Community Relationships
County council members are University of Missouri Extension's
link to the people in their communities.
Be knowledgeable about the
educational needs of the community and
local extension educational programs.
- Work with faculty and staff to
develop educational programs that
meet local education needs.
- Help neighbors, business
associates and friends connect
with Extension.
Be an ambassador for University of Missouri Extension in your
community.
- Share information about impacts,
programs and needs assessments
with county commissioners,
legislators and other decision
makers and opinion leaders.
- Develop working relationships
with news media. Through personal
visits, phone calls, media
advisories and news releases, keep
media informed of local extension
activities, program impact and the
mission of Extension.
- Make presentations to civic
groups and community
organizations.
- Prepare an attractive annual report that emphasizes
educational impact. See

- Participate in local festivals, fairs and other exhibiting
opportunities.
Develop relationships in the community
- Invite elected officials, community leaders and University
alumni to participate in
programs.
- Create linkages with University alumni in your community
- Host events for local leaders. Invite program participants
who can explain how your programs improved their lives.
- Use Extension marketing and
communication pieces, and use the
logo consistently and
appropriately. Consult the
Graphic
Standards.
- Establish a county extension council marketing committee to
provide leadership in making extension visible in the
community.
- Participate in the UM Alumni
Alliance Legislative Day in
Jefferson City.
