COLUMBIA, Mo. – Anyone interested in growing hops may attend a free field day at Bradford Research Center in Columbia.

Visitors can take self-guided tours and attend presentations 1-4 p.m. Tuesday, May 23. The hops yard is at the entrance of the University of Missouri research farm at 4968 Rangeline Road, Columbia.

MU Extension horticulturists Patrick Byers and Jim Quinn will share their experiences growing hops for home brewers and small brewpubs. Byers says Missourians are showing great interest in brewing their own beer from locally grown hops.

Byers and Quinn planted 10 varieties of hops at the 1/4-acre hops yard at Bradford. They will lead a tour of the hops yard and share information on cultivar choice and planting preparations. They also will give presentations on the construction of the trellis system needed for hops and review commonly used systems.

Contact Byers at byerspl@missouri.edu or 417-859-2044 to register.
