February and March - Pesticide Applicator Training Scheduled Classes

Farmers and ranchers who use restricted use pesticides in their operations need to have a license to purchase those products. For producers whose license is expiring in 2018 or for those needing a license for the first time, Private Pesticide Applicator Training sessions have been scheduled by Joni Harper, Extension Agronomy Specialist. The classes will be approximately 2 hours. Due to the new regulations, this training will not qualify you for the use of Dicamba. You must attend one of the statewide training sessions specific to Dicamba. There is a requirement that producers must have the M87 "Private Pesticide Applicator Reference Manual" in their possession for the class. Those who do not have one, the cost is $12.00. Classes are as follows:

  • February 6, Cole Co. Extension Center at 2 PM or 6 PM
  • February 7, Camden Co. Extension Center at 2 PM or 6 PM
  • February 13, Versailles, Sims Room at 10 AM or 6 PM
  • March 22, California High School Vo Ag Bldg. at  6:30 PM

Call (573) 378-5358 to register for the class.

Don’t guess — soil tests save time and money

Soil testing is the best guide to the wise and efficient use of fertilizer and soil amendments, says Manjula Nathan, director of the MU Extension Soil Testing and Plant Diagnostic Services.

Whether you grow acres of row crops or have a vegetable patch in the backyard, a soil test will provide you with an analysis of nutrients and a set of recommendations for any improvements.

“We frequently get questions from customers like, ‘I apply fertilizer every year. How come my plants are not doing well?’” Nathan says.

“Most of the time the problem is they never have done a soil test, but have been guessing on fertilizer requirements,” she says. “They do not realize that by guessing they are wasting money by over- or under application, and the excess fertilizer can end up in streams, ponds and underground water, polluting the environment.”

Soil testing can be done through the extension office. Soil test prices are 1-4 soil test at $15 per sample, 5-8 soil test at $14 per sample and 9 or more samples will be $13.50 per sample. For more information, see these soil testing publications
