Northeast Region Programs for June 1, 2008 through May 30, 2009

This is a list of the programs, events and activities that MU Extension faculty plan to conduct in the Northeast Region between June 1, 2008 and May 30, 2009.  To read a description of any program on the list, select (click on) the program name.  You will be taken to the program description.  If you want to know when a program, event or activity will be conducted, go to the MU Extension Statewide Calendar.  Search for the program by name.  At the Statewide Calendar, you may also search for the program by name only within the Northeast Region.  If the program, activity or event you want to attend is not on the Statewide Calendar, contact your local (county) MU Extension County Program Director for the information.

Ag Resources for Northeast Missouri

 

Agriculture Business Programs

*Risk Management - An instructional series targeting at helping Missouri farmers and livestock operators manage risks in their farm business.  This program focuses on: (1) Developing financial budgets and statements to assess financial risk, (2) Building a well-researched marketing plan, and (3) Learning how to manage legal risks such as human resources, insurance, and contracts.

*Farm and Small Business Estate Planning - A three-session course designed to improve participant's knowledge and comfort level in planning their estate.  The topics of discussion include probate, estate planning tools, communication and property ownership.

*Lady Landowner Workshops - The number of women involved in agriculture is growing.  This is a program geared toward women landowners and operators.  The main objective of this program is to provide participants with knowledge and information that will help them make the best decisions for their operations.  The topics of discussion include estate planning, farm leases, USDA government programs and gardening.

*Landowner Liability Workshop - An instructional series targeted at Missouri farmers and landowners.  This informational workshop includes 7 sessions about protecting yourself and your farm from landowner liabilities.  The topics of discussion include Missouri's Fence and Boundary Laws, Leases, and Contracts, Government Programs, Employers & Employees, business Organization, Environmental Issues, and Livestock Ownership.

*Ag Lenders Seminar - This program is to assist lenders (bankers, implement dealers, FSA-Ag Credit, etc.) in working with their ag clients.  Yearly price outlook and management information is provided at these meetings.

*Ag/Extension Information Night - This program is held in many of the counties in the Northeast Region.  The program includes 3-4 concurrent sessions and dinner, which is provided by several local businesses.  Interested persons can attend different sessions on a variety of topics in agriculture, horticulture and home economics as well as other fields.

*Quicken: Record Keeping Made Simple - An instructional series targeted at Missouri farmers and small business owners.  Participants learn how to properly set up and use Quicken.  They also gain valuable knowledge on proper record keeping for their farm or business using the Quicken software.

Agronomy Programs

*Pesticide Applicator Training - Under a cooperative agreement with Missouri Department of Agriculture, provide training necessary for private pesticide applicators to receive their license, which is necessary for purchasing and using restricted-use pesticides.  Training cover pest ID, application methods, environmental safety, personal safety, and emergency first aid.

*Scouting Training - Training in crop scouting, covering pest (weed, insect, and disease) identification, as well as control measures (cultural, mechanical, biological and chemical).

*Watershed Protection - Work with the Soil and Water Conservation District; provide general watershed protection programming (terraces & structures, no-till and cover crops, nutrient management).  This programming includes the annual "Turf Issues...Management Strategies for Golf Courses, Athletic Fields, and Open Spaces" and "Western Illinois-Northeast Missouri No-Till land Crop Management Seminar" workshops.

*Biotechnology Education - Programming on herbicide-and insect-resistant crops, and issues associated with their use (effectiveness, stewardship, marketability, and profitability).

*Agronomic Production Techniques - Nutrient and pesticide placement, planting populations, environmental stewardship, crop yields, and profitability.

*Forage Management Programming - Management Intensive Grazing Schools (a cooperative effort with NRCS), Pasture Management Short Courses and forage testing.

*Soil Testing - Nutrient and lime recommendations, ensuring optimum profit, prevention of over-fertilization, and maintenance of high yields.  University of Missouri Soil Testing Lab web page is located at http://www.soiltest.psu.missouri.edu

*Sustainable/Alternative/Organic Agriculture Programming - Organic certification process, production practices, and pest control.  Individual consultations and small farm field day.

*General Consultations - Pest identification and control measures.

Livestock Programs

*Northeast Missouri Sheep Producers Association Meeting and Field Day - Tour of sheep operation, educational programs, and NEMSPA meeting. Open to anyone with an interest in sheep production.

*Missouri Livestock Symposium - Educational speakers from 12 states on horses, beef cattle, forages, sheep, meat goats, swine, and "around the home".  Also new for 2004 speakers on corn and soybean topics.

*Show-Me-Select Heifer Replacement Program - 7th Annual Northeast Missouri Show-Me-Select replacement heifer sale.  The Show-Me-Select Replacement Heifer program has among its objectives to increase the information about replacement animals in the program and their values.
