Happy Birthday! University of Missouri Extension celebrates 70 years in Iron County at the County Fair
The Annual Report of 1934 by Agricultural Agent L.W. Doran stated: "The extension service set up an office in Iron County on August 1." He continues, "A great deal of interest was shown in the extension service. During these four months [August to December 1934], over 1200 office calls and 12 telephone calls were received. 18 news articles were published; 381 individual letters and 10 circular letters (over 1800 copies) were sent out of the office. The programs have been far reaching in their work, and there is not a community in the county but what has been affected by them. Office records show that of the 740 farm families in the county, 651 families have benefited either from the Corn-Hog or the Cattle Program, and many have benefited by both." He concludes, "There is real need in Iron County for some good extension work to be carried on. The best suggestion for next year would be a well planned extension program composed of a great deal of women's club work and 4-H Club work." 70 years later, we still follow Agent Doran's suggestions! Happy Birthday!
