Community Development

Create communities of the future with community development education and resources from University of Missouri Extension.

The first settlers in Grundy County were General W.P. Thompson and his family in 1833.  A year later Levi Moore and his family arrived and the area soon became known as "Moore's Settlement".  In 1838 the first store opened nearby in what was then called Lomax and became known as the City of Trenton by 1857.  Grundy County was organized in 1841 with set boundaries and soon became a fast growing town.  One of it's main businesses, from 1873 to 1943, was mining with three different coal mines in the area along with the railroad, which helped the mining industry here to thrive.  General W.P. Thompson's house still exists today in a hidden part of Crowder Park along the Thompson River.   Grundy County has a very rich history and we hope you will take time to visit us.
