Herbicide Update GM Crops Meeting Back On
The herbicide update and genetically modified crops meeting originally scheduled for Thursday, January 16, but canceled due to weather conditions has been rescheduled for Wednesday, February 19. The meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the lower level of the Memorial Auditorium in Union.Andy Kendig, State Extension Weed Scientist based at the Delta Center in Portageville will present a herbicide update with a focus on corn herbicides. Plan to bring your weed control questions to help plan this years season.
Bill Wiebold, State Extension Soybean Specialist will present information on new genetically modified crops. He will present information about pharmaceutical crops and what the future may hold for this “new” crop.

Dairy Profit Seminar
A Dairy Profit Seminar will be held Friday, February 21 starting at 9:30 a.m. at Hagies Nineteen on Washington Avenue in Union. Featured speaker will be Monte Hemenover, National Dairy Consultant, speaking on “What’s the Future with Low Milk Prices?” In addition we will have Farmer to Farmer Discussions with topics to include
- Dairy Business Management with Joe Horner,
- A 100 day Contract with your Dairy Herd with Dr. Jim Spain
- Labor and Employee management with Dr. Barry Stevens.
The meeting is sponsored with the Franklin Dairy Herd Improvement Association.
Herd Health-Bull Fry
The annual Herd Health-Bull Fry will be held Saturday, February 22 starting at 6:30 p.m. at the K.C. Hall on Hwy. 50 West in Union. Topics to include Biosecurity on your Farm with Dr. Bill Wolff, DVM and Heifer Development via the Sho-Me Select Program with Ben Davis, Regional Livestock Specialist. The Franklin County Cattlemen will be preparing the meal which will be free to members. A $5 fee will be collected for non-members. All interested cattlemen are encouraged to join, take advantage of educational programs, promote beef and youth activities.
Private Pesticide Applicator Training/Recertification
People who need to renew their private applicators license or who need a new license can attend one of three training sessions scheduled in February and March.
Training sessions will be held Monday, February 24 at 1:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. at the Scenic Regional Library in Union. A third training session will be held Monday, March 3 at 7:00 p.m. at the Berger Firehouse.
The training involves viewing a 70 minute video that discusses pesticide safety topics. After viewing the video the applicant can complete an application for either license renewal or for a new license.
If you would like to attend one of these trainings, please contact the Franklin County University Extension Office at (636) 583-5141 to register. Registration will allow us to prepare for sufficient seating and materials.
Youth Beef Management/Showing and Fitting Clinic
On Saturday, March 29 there will be a Youth Beef Management/Showing and Fitting Clinic starting at 9:00 a.m. at the Washington Town and Country Fairgrounds. This program is for youth exhibitors and leaders, we will cover selection, feeding, pre-fair preparation, showing and grooming of your beef project animals.
