Ever heard about a "Master Gardener", but wondered who they were or how to become one? There are many MG's. A Master Gardener (MG) is someone who has been through a series of gardening classes, at least 30 hours in all.
A highlight of these topics include (classes may change):
Since 2000, a course has been held every fall, at the Cole County Extension Center. And since 2003, a spring course was added as well.
After attending a twelve-week course, it is time to give back to the community. A chance to continue to grow. 30 hours of volunteer service, are required, the first year. To remain active, 26 hours are required. Please remember to fill out the service record to count the hours, and return it to the Cole County Office by November 30.
Fortunately, Cole County has a very active group of Master Gardeners. Some current approved projects are:
Don't forget about the "large" plant sale. It is held annually, the first Saturday of May, at the Jefferson City Jaycees Fairground. Rain or Shine! Please come early. Call the office for more information and to check the dates.
The Master Gardener Program is open to any adult who is interested in gardening and willing to donate back to the community. The joining fee is $135 per person or $220 per couple, and 30 volunteer hours. Interested gardeners should call or e-mail the office at coleco@missouri.edu today. Registration is limited. Classes are held at the Cole County Extension Center in the spring and fall of the year, one night a week.
After completing, level I Master Gardener courses, inquire about the the level II, Advanced Master Gardener Course. In order to be eligible, trainees need to complete the original Master Gardener Program and complete 30 volunteer hours. There is a fee for this program to cover material costs.
