MU Extension seeking County Engagement Specialist in 4-H Youth Development

MU Extension is currently taking applications for the position of County Engagement Specialist in 4-H Youth Development (27078).  This is full time, non-tenure track, and benefit eligible position.  This position will primarily serve the West-Central Region in Cedar, Bates and Vernon counties.  Position is based in Stockton, MO.  An earned master's degree with minimum of 24 hours of upper level coursework in one or more of the following areas: child, adolescent, and adult human development: education, learning theory and learning strategies; organizational systems and human resource management; community development/partnerships; and volunteerism.  Degrees in education, social work, child/family/human development, psychology, sociology, community development and leisure studies represent some of the fields of study of successful applicants.  For more details and application information click on the job opening button below.

Farm, Family & ME! – Summit for Women

Missouri Pesticide Collection Event

Free pesticide collection for Missouri farmers and households will be at the Vernon County Fairgrounds at 1488 E. Ashland St., Nevada, MO on Saturday, July 21, 2018 from 8:00 a.m. to noon.  Accepting all pesticides including: herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, rodenticides, dewormers, fly tags and fertilizer containing pesticides.  Pesticides from businesses will not be accepted.  For questions, call 573-751-0616 or visit:

Alfalfa 101

Alfalfa 101: Establishing a stand, starting production, harvesting, feeding and economics, will be held on July 24, 2018 at the University of Missouri Extension Center in Barton County, located at 801 East 12th St., Lamar, MO.  Class will begin at 4 p.m. and conclude around 8:30 p.m.  Cost is $30 per person and includes dinner.  Registration and payment is due by July 23.  No refunds after the deadline.  For more information or to register contact the Barton County Extension Center at 417-682-3579.

Impact of Tiling

Field tour will begin at 8 a.m. on July 24, 2018 at the Russell Johnson Farm, located at 6261 E Osage Nation, Deerfield, MO.  Presentation will be at 10 a.m. at the Vernon County Fairgrounds at 1488 E. Ashland, Nevada, MO.  Registration is due July 23 to the Vernon County Extension Center at 417-448-2560

Missouri Hay Directory

These listings are a joint venture of the Missouri Department of Agriculture and the University of Missouri.  The listings include sellers names, cities, counties and phone numbers. Sellers can be listed by either region or forage type. Bale type is included: small square, large square, small round, large round, baleage, or other. The number of bales and approximate weight of each bale of hay is included, and if the hay has been analyzed, crude protein, acid detergent fiber, neutral detergent fiber, relative feed value, and percent total digestible nutrients may be included. A final area for notes catches information such as "first cutting", or "don't call before 6 p.m."

To list hay you wish to sell:

  • enter a new listing via the menu options on the AgEBB Hay Market Page

  • call the Missouri Department of Agriculture at 573-751-5633

  • visit your county extension office and have them list your hay

Hay listings will be left on the AgEBB system for 60 days unless updated.  All listings will be included in the Missouri Hay Directory. Vegetable gardening questions

As the peek gardening season comes near, here at Extension we get many questions about gardening.  This guide is a section from the Missouri Master Gardener handbook on vegetable gardening.  It provides information from plant and site selection, irrigation and common problems.  There are many other publications available through our website on gardening and other topics as well.  Just click the link at the top of the page titled Publications.

Soil tests save time and money. Whether you have acres of pasture or have a vegetable patch in the backyard, a soil test will provide you with an analysis of nutrients and a set of recommendations for improvements.
