Registration:

Attendance of an orientation session is a required first step to participate in the training classes. Orientations will be held on Jan. 31 and Feb. 2 from 6-8 pm at the Springfield-Greene County Botanical Center. Contact Kelly McGowan at mcgowank@missouri.edu to register for orientation. Training classes will begin on Feb. 16 and be held on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 1-4 pm through April 11. All classes but 2 will be held at the Springfield-Greene County Botanical Center; the additional 2 will be held at the Springfield-Greene County Library Station.

Living a Healthy Life with Diabetes in Warsaw (Session 4 of 6)

Description:

This course is designed for help people who have diabetes or individuals who care for someone who has diabetes to become better self-managers of their condition. This program will consist of six sessions each lasting 2 to 2 1/2 hours. Participants will learn to plan healthful meals with balanced carbohydrates, learn more about the benefits of physical activity, discuss blood sugar highs and lows, and how to communicate more effectively with health professionals. Participants will receive a free book and weekly prizes!

In session 4 participants will discuss difficult emotions, reading nutrition labels, endurance activities, guided imagery, and action plans.

Mental Health First Aid

Description:

Youth Mental Health First Aid is designed to teach parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, peers, neighbors, health and human services workers, and other caring citizens how to help an adolescent (age 12-18) who is experiencing a mental health or addictions challenge or is in crisis. Youth Mental Health First Aid is primarily designed for adults who regularly interact with young people. Participants who take the 8-hour course are certified as Mental Health First Aiders for Youth. They learn a 5-step action plan encompassing the skills, resources and knowledge to help an adolescent (ages 12 to 18) in crisis and in non-crisis situations connect with appropriate professional, peer, social, and self-help care. The Stay Strong, Stay Healthy Program is an evidence-based strength training program designed to meet the fitness needs of older adults and middle age sedentary adults. It is an eight-week program, where participants are guided through a strength training routine two times per week. The event will be held in the Kempton Room at the Fred E. Davis Multi-Purpose Center at State Fair Community College in Sedalia, MO. Class will be from 9:15-10:15 a.m.
