Stay Strong, Stay Healthy - Level 1 Shelby County Senior Center (Session 11 of 17)

Description:

Missouri’s SSSH program is designed to increase aging adults’ access to a safe, structured and effective strength training program. Over 8 weeks, participants learn exercises to improve their strength, flexibility and balance. During each session, a prescribed set of 8 upper and lower body strengthening exercises are done along with warm-up and cool-down stretches. Participants are made to feel comfortable regardless of their current fitness level so they can safely participate and gradually build the strength beneficial to health. Stay Strong, Stay Healthy is adapted from the Strong Women Program, A National Fitness Program for Women, John Hancock Center for Physical Activity and Nutrition, Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy, 2008 Tufts University, Boston Massachusetts.

A Matter of Balance is a holistic program focused on preventing falls among adults and seniors. Missouri's population is aging. Citizens have identified aging and living independently as priorities for educational programming. MU Health Sciences and research states that falls are the most common reason for adult emergency room visits. If falls can be prevented, adults can save thousands of dollars in healthcare expenses.

Master Gardener Program (Session 4 of 11)

The Master Gardener volunteer program began in the early 1970’s in response to the rapidly increasing interest in home gardening. The idea was to train knowledgeable garden volunteers to help University Extension staff deliver home gardening information to the public. The idea worked! Today, the Master Gardener volunteer program is recognized nationally as a means for individuals to learn and to share horticultural knowledge with others. Our course consists of ten, 3-hour sessions covering many of the following topics: Understanding Soil and Plant Nutrition Plant Growth and Development Annual / Floral and Vegetable Production Perennial Gardening (Trees, Shrubs, and Perennial plants) Insect and/or Integrated Pest Management Fruit Trees, Bramble Berries, and Grape Production Lawn and Turf Management Plant Diagnostics and Disease Control Raised Beds and Container Grown Gardening Courses will be conducted by MU Extension Specialists and other professionals

Moles, Voles, Gophers & Armadillos

Gardeners and farmers are challenged with nuisance animals such as moles, voles, gophers or armadillos. Sometimes it is difficult to identify which animal creates the problem. Some growers question how to remove the nuisance. Missouri University Extension in Pulaski County, with local Missouri Master Gardeners, will present the course: MOLES, VOLES, GOPHERS & ARMADILLOS. This course is offered the last Thursday in September; September 27th, at 6:00 pm at the Pulaski County Courthouse in downtown Waynesville. The address is 301 Rte 66, Waynesville, Missouri. The speaker is Anne Premont, Advanced Master Gardener. She will cover: 1) the habitat and food that attracts nuisance animals, and 2) trapping and removal techniques per MU Extension and the Missouri Department of Conservation. The fee is $10.
