    Land of the Osages Research Center Grand Opening and Field Day

    GRAND OPENING:
    CAFNR has a network of Agricultural Research Centers, called the Agricultural Experiment Station (AES), spread throughout the state. CAFNR will add to that network with the grand opening of the Land of the Osages Research Center. It’s the first new Research Center in CAFNR’s AES network in more than 30 years.
    This Center is funded by a donor’s estate gift. He wished to build a partnership be-tween the Osage Nation and agroforestry.
    CAFNR is thrilled that Chief Standing Bear and many other leaders from the Osage Nation will be joining us for the Grand Opening of the Center, which will feature more information about the partnership and agroforestry research. more...

    Tai Chi for Arthritis & Fall Prevention (Session 11 of 16)

    Description:

    Tai chi is one of the most effective, easy to learn, exercises for health of mind and body. The Tai Chi for Arthritis and Falls Prevention program is designed to improve multiple aspects of health through slow, gentle movements that can be practiced almost anywhere. The degree of exertion can be easily adjusted making this program suitable for adults of all levels and abilities. Published medical studies have shown benefits such as pain relief, improved balance and reduced falls. You will learn warm-up exercises, 6 Basic and 6 Advanced moves, and a cool down during 16 one hour classes. Harmony of inner and outer self comes from integrating mind and body, which can be achieved through the ongoing practice of tai chi.

    Stay Strong, Stay Healthy - Level 1 (Session 13 of 16)

    Description:

    Stay Strong, Stay Healthy (SSSH) aims to provide inactive middle-aged and older adults with access to a safe, structured and effective exercise program capable of building muscle and increasing bone density, thus decreasing frailty, osteoporosis and the risk of falls. SSSH helps participants meet the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s physical activity recommendations.

    SSSH challenges participants through incremental increases in exercise volume and intensity. Led by a certified instructor, participants complete a warmup, a prescribed set of upper- and lower-body strengthening exercises and a cool-down at each class. Participants are made to feel comfortable regardless of their current fitness level so they can safely participate and gradually build the strength beneficial to health.

    Description:

    Missouri’s SSSH program is designed to increase aging adults’ access to a safe, structured and effective strength training program. Over 8 weeks, participants learn exercises to improve their strength, flexibility and balance. During each session, a prescribed set of 8 upper and lower body strengthening exercises are done along with warm-up and cool-down stretches. Participants are made to feel comfortable regardless of their current fitness level so they can safely participate and gradually build the strength beneficial to health.

    SSSH is modeled after the evidenced-based StrongWomen program developed by researchers at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science at Tufts University. While the original Tufts program includes only women, University of Missouri Extension has adapted the curriculum to include men.

    Participants must register to attend event. For MU employees, 100 wellness points may be obtained per 8 week session if 14/16 classes are attended.
