The Heartland Master Gardener Club began in April of 2002. It
is part of the state-wide volunteer training program conducted by University
Extension. The Master Gardener program is designed to help county extension
centers and communities meet the demands for consumer horticultural information.
Heartland's training classes were held every Monday night, January through April 2002, for
12 weeks in Brookfield (Linn County). Classes covered a wide
array of subjects, and were coordinated by the regional agronomy and
horticulture specialists with the assistance of already trained master
gardeners. Twenty-six people from Chariton, Linn, and Macon counties completed
the training.
After the classroom training, master gardeners must volunteer 30 hours of community service
their first year, and 20 hours each year after to maintain active Master
Gardener status. |
