A chat with Pat Buchanan

Above, Pat Buchanan shows Tiger pride with Director of Development Cat Comley.

Pat Buchanan is a retired assistant to the associate vice president of extension.

Pat Buchanan finds it rewarding to volunteer through the school year at local schools and in the community. She listens to and encourages elementary students as they read to her. She also manages inventory for the Upscale Resale store, which is operated by the Assistance League of Mid-Missouri to use its profits for community work.

Cat Comley and Cynthia Crawford recently had lunch with Pat and asked her why she and Tom established an endowment for professional development with University of Missouri Extension.

“Tom and I started an endowment for extension because we wanted to give back to an organization that means so much to us and has given us a lot. Too many people think it takes a huge amount of money and that you have to give it all at once. That is not the case,” she said. The Buchanans focus on funding professional development opportunities for regional extension specialists.

Janet LaFon, family financial education specialist in Jasper County, was the first to receive the award in 2005. Nearly ten years later, she identifies the award she received as being significant in her career: “It was an honor to be the first recipient of the Pat and Tom Buchanan Endowment Professional Development Award, something that is very special to me since I had the privilege to work with them. The award was used to attend the 2005 Association for Financial Counseling and Planning Education national conference, which provided an excellent mix of information that was easy to incorporate into my work. Their generous contribution has helped me and will help many extension employees and their clientele for years to come.”
